In the past decade the United Nations Organisation has sent out a clear message to the world- it is in need of a new, stronger commitment from its members. One of the fundamental challenges of the United Nations remains to be the lack of national implementation of UN conventions and resolutions.
In the beginning of the year, the United Nations Association Germany was approached by its Youth Association with an idea of how this problem could be alleviated. Our Youth Association would like to bring into being a students’ initiative, working across countries towards a better implementation of UN agreements. Over a period of 18 months the students’ initiative, entitled Making Commitments Matter Initiative, is to come up with creative ways of helping civil society actors all over the world to hold their governments to their international promises.
The United Nations Association Germany has agreed to host the constitutive conference of the Initiative in Bonn, Germany in January 2008. In the following months we will conduct a selection procedure, coming up with twenty to fifty young participants. University students, graduates and PhD students up to the age of thirty are welcome to apply.
